Setting

The setting of the story can determine

the events in the plot.  For example,

a story set in Hawaii would not include

people shoveling their driveways.

The setting of the story is made up of

three parts:

Time:  the time of the setting refers to an era or a time period.  An example could be very specific, such as segregation era, the mid-70's, the year 2023; or it can be very vague, such as "the present," "the past," or "the future."  It may even be the time of day.

Place:  this refers to the actual location(s) where the story takes place.  This can be a farm, or more specific such as, a farm in Eden, New York.

Environment:  this talks about what is happening that is unique to the time and place.  It may be a major event like a flood, war, or slavery.

The setting is often conveyed through the use of descriptive language, and it can affect the atmosphere or mood of the story.
