Maniac Magee's Important Words

 

 

 

Chapters 1-5

 

Maniac:  Born Jeffrey Magee in Bridgeport, PA

 

Orphan:  His parents were kelled in a trolley crash when he was three years old.

 

Scream:  He screams at a concert because his aunt and uncle will not share anything including him.

 

Runaway:  He runs away from them, this is called the lost year.

 

Segregation:  He ends up in Two Mills which is segregated into two parts- the east side and the west side.  The  east side is for the blacks and the west side is for the whites.

 

Amanda:   First person he meets, she is a black girl.

 

Books:  Amanda loans Jeffrey one of her precious books.

 

Football:  Jeffrey intercepts a football from "Hands Down"  all while he is carrying the book Amanda gave him.

 

Finsterwald's:  Jeffrey saves a boy being thrown into the backyard of this house that everyone is afraid of.

 

legend:  Jeffrey's actions make him a hero, which is how the legend of Maniac Magee begins.

 

Chapters 6-10

 

 

 

 

Chapters 11-15

 

Bullied:  Maniac is stopped by Mars Bar when trying to return Amanda's Book

 

Amanda:  She "takes-on" Mars Bar, yells at him and he runs away.

 

Home:  Maniac goes home with Amanda and meets her family

 

Address:  Maniac finally has an address, 728 Sycamore Street, Amanda's home.

 

bath:  Jeffrey takes a bath with Hester and Lester who had refused to take one.

 

pizza:  Maniac finds out he is allergic to pizza.

 

Hallelujah:  He shouts this in church because he is happy and thankful for his new life.

 

Maniac:  The neighbor hood now calls him this, but NOT Mrs. Beale

 

Trash Talk:  Mrs. Beale slaps Jeffrey for trash talking and he realizes he is loved.

 

Love:  Maniac loves his new life and has a family that loves him.
