Chapter 1

 

1.  What kind of school is Yancy Academy?

 

Yancy Academy is a boarding School for troubled students.

 

2.  Why can’t Percy get back at Nancy when she starts teasing Grover on the bus?

 

Percy is on probation.

 

3.  Why doesn’t Percy get along with Mrs. Dodds?

 

Mrs. Dodds favors Nancy, so anything Percy does is wrong.

 

4.  Why does Percy get angry at Mr. Brunner?

 

Mr. Brunner is always pushing Percy to do his best.

 

5.  What do you learn about Percy’s home life as he’s watching the taxis on Fifth Avenue?

 

Percy lives with his mom in a tiny apartment on the upper side of Manhattan.

 

Chapter 2

 

6.   Why does Percy think the whole school is playing a trick on him?

 

No one will admit that there was once a Mrs. Dodd's, so Percy thinks they are playing a trick on him.

 

7.  What leads Percy to believe that Grover and Mr. Brunner think he’s in danger?

 

Percy hears Mr. Brunner and Grover talking about him.

 

8.  How do Percy and Grover end up on the side of the highway?

 

The bus breaks down, so Percy and Grover have to get out on the side of the highway.

 

9.  What does Percy think the yarn‐cutting means? Does Grover seem to agree or not?

 

Percy thinks the yarn cutting means that someone is going to die.  Grover agrees and thinks it will be Percy.

 

Chapter 3

 

1.  Why does Percy leave Grover at the bus station?

 

Grover has freaked him out saying that he was there to protect him

 

2.  Describe Gabe.

 

Gabe is a smelly, fat, beer drinking, poker playing slob.  He is rude to Percy and his mom.

 

3.  Why doesn’t Percy tell his mom the truth about Mrs. Dodds and the ladies at the fruit stand?

 

He didn't want to feel stupid.

 

4.  Why is Montauk special to Percy’s mom?

 

Montauk is where Percy's mom met his father.

 

5.  What new information does Percy learn about his dad?

 

Percy learns that he looks like his father, and that he left before he was born.

 

6.  How does the title of the chapter, “Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants,” come true?

 

Grover comes to the cabin in Montauk, he is not wearing pants and has hooves instead of feet.

 

Chapter 4

 

7.  According to Grover, who is after Percy?

 

The lord of the Dead and his minions.

 

8.  What happens to make the car crash?

 

Lightning Strikes the car and blasts it off the road.

 

9.  What happens to Percy's mother?

 

She is vaporized by the bull-man, the Minotaur.

 

10.  What's the last thing Percy remembers?

Chapter 5

 

 

1.  Why does Grover say he retrieved the Minotaur horn?

 

It was the least he could do, because Percy saved his life.

 

 

2.  As he's gazing out from the front porch, what surprises Percy about the summer camp?

 

The Greek architecure, the satyrs playing volleyball, but mostly the horses with wings.

 

 

3.  What does Percy find striking about Annabeth's appearance?

 

Annabeth's eyes were the color of storm clouds, and very intimidating.

 

 

4.  What clues help Percy guess Mr. D's identity?

 

The clues that helped Percy identy Mr. D were the wine, the skin of a tiger, the satyrs, and that Mr. D seemed to be Grover's master.  These clues helped Percy to realize that Mr. D was Dionysus, the god of wine.

 

 

5.  Who is Chiron?

Chiron is Mr. Brunner.

 

Chapter 6

 

 

6.  Why are the cabins numbered?

 

The cabins are numbered after the 12 Olympian gods.

 

 

 

7.  How does Annabeth know that Percy is "one of us"?

 

Annabeth knows that Percy is one of them because he did not die from drinking the nectar, but also because he has dyslexia, ADHD, and has moved from school to school.

 

 

8.  What happens to Clarisse and her friends in the bathroom?

 

They get attacked by the water from the toilets, the showers, and the faucets.

 

Chapter 7

 

1.  Who are Annabeth's parents?

 

The goddess Athena and a mortal.  He is a professor at West Point.

 

2.  Why are some summer campers and others year-'rounders?

 

It is too dangerous for some kids to leave the camp because they attract monsters.  Kids of lesser gods are not as powerful a force.

 

3.  Why does Luke feel bitter?

 

He resents his father, Hermes.  He does not ever come to see him.

 

4.  Why are the counselors having a hard time deciding who Percy's Olympian parent is?

 

He doesn't have the same skills as the other campers do.

 

5.  How does Percy surprise everone during his first sword class?

 

He disarmed Luke, sending his sword to the ground.

 

Chapter 8

 

6.  According to Grover, why did the "Bog Three" gods swear never to have more children?

 

Their children were too powerful and causing destruction in the world.

 

7.  Who was Thalia?

 

Zeus's daughter, that he turned into a pine tree when she died.

 

8.  Why does Annabeth send Percy into the water?

 

She knows the water will heal him.

 

9.  What's Percy's true identity?

 

Percy is Poseidon's son.

 

Chapter 9

 

1.  What is the master bolt?

 

The master bolt is the symbol of Zeus's power.  It is the archetype from which all other lightning bolts are patterned.  It has enough power to make mortal hydrogen bombs look like firecrackers.

 

 

 

2. Why does Zeus think Percy stole the bolt?

 

Zeus thinks Percy stole the bold because he was in New York City when it was taken, and he is Poeidon's son.

 

 

3. What bothers Percy about the Oracle’s prophecy?

 

Percy does not like that the Oracle said that a friend would betray him and he will fail to  save what matters most.

 

 

4. According to Chiron, what evidence suggests that Hades stole the lightning bolt?

 

Chiron believes that Hades stole the bolt because a Fury came after Percy.   The only ones the Furies obey is Hades.

 

 

5. What will happen on the summer solstice if the lightning bolt is not returned?

 

There will be another great war, with lots of destruction.

 

 

6.  Who is Argus and why can he never be surprised?

 

Argus was the head of security at the camp.  He was taking them to the city.  He can never be surprised because he has eyes all over his body.

 

 

7. What gift does Luke give to Percy? Why can’t Percy use them?

 

Luke gives Percy a pair of flying shoes.  Percy can not use them because he is not safe in the air, that is Zeus's territory.

 

 

8. What special properties does Riptide have?

 

Riptide is a pen that turns into a sword.  It will only kill monsters and half-bloods, it can not harm humans.

 

 

9. What is Mist?

 

 

The mist is something that obscures the vision of humans.  It makes them interpret what they see differently.

 

 

10. According to Grover, why did Percy’s mom marry Gabe?

 

Percy's mom married Gabe to save Percy.  His smell was so bad that it kept the monsters away.

 

Chapter 11

 

1.  What does Aunty Em look like when she opens the door?

 

Aunty Em is dressed in black from head to toe.  Nothing can be seen but her hands.

 

2.  What was Aunty Em's true identity?

 

Aunty Em is really Medussa.

 

3.  What were the clues that Aunty Em was Medusa?

 

The hissing sound is the snakes on here head, the statues with suprised looks on their faces, and she talks about her two sisters that died.

 

4.  What important information does Percy find in Medusa'a office?

 

Percy finds some addresses in Medusa's office.  One was to the underworld in Hollywood, California.

 

5.  Where did Percy send Medusa's head?

 

Percy sends Medusa's heads to the gods at Mount Olympus.
